The problem actually stemmed from the slideshow player not handling comma's properly and not due to file handling and improper filename convention.

I've updated the module to handle comma's correctly and slideshows should be working now.

This is caused by improper filenames, in this case its caused by the comma in the filename: TAKE 2, Fellowship images_26_0.jpg

This was fixed for image content, but hasnt been implemented by the bulk upload module, will look into it.
