screenwriting unit is designed to build your knowledge about story telling and focuses on the writing of TV, radio, short film and feature film scripts. Whilst primarily dealing with forms of dramatic fiction, you'll also look at documentary and documentary drama. You'll analyse different forms of script writing and screen writing, the elements they have in common and the specific tools that can help to deliver better scripts in each medium.

Purpose / Aim of this session:
Welcome to Session five of our online course. In this session we will be looking at one of our favourite aspects of screenplay writing -- character development. Who are your characters, how do they think, feel and act?

AccessArt: How to use pencil measurements in life drawing

Recently came across AccessArt a charity committed to furthering the advancement of education in the visual arts. Lots of great content on their site and youtube. www.accessart.org.uk

AccessArt has led the way in employing new and creative approaches to teaching and learning particularly for those who learn best visually, spatially and kinaesthetically.

AccessArt designs and delivers creative projects in the community and in schools, working with learners of all ages. This learning and teaching is then developed and shared via the AccessArt web site, which is a richly textured, dynamic and inspirational resource bank aimed at pupils, students and life-long-learners, as well as teachers, gallery educators and artists.

In this video - Sheila Ceccarelli from AccessArt describes to teenagers how to use a pencil to measure and draw the figure in proportion.

The Open College of the Arts producing OERs

Over the last two years the The Open College of the Arts have been producing regular and really high quality videos of artists talking, demonstrating their processes etc and students talking about their work, as well as exhibition reviews etc for their students. The OCA have made their resources open access on two websites:

The OCA is an educational charity established in 1987 to widen participation in arts education. Students can study our courses to develop their skills or to gain credits towards a degree. Undergraduate degrees are accredited by Bucks New University. Our postgraduate MA Fine Art degree is accredited by the University for the Creative Arts (UCA).

A recent set of videos of Eileen Adams talking about sketchbooks is an example of the quality and richness of their material. New material is coming in January about using old type sets.

VIDEO: Making the most of sketchbooks and learning logs

Eileen Adams is a fervent believer in the value of sketchbooks. We were delighted when this sketchbook guru (known for her contribution to Campaign for Drawing) agreed to be filmed talking about sketchbooks and the role of learning logs. I approached her after hearing her keynote speech at a conference all about sketchbooks earlier in the year in which she inspired all present. Its really worth taking a look at what she has to say since she has spent many years thinking and learning about sketchbooks and their many uses. She talks about this in this first clip.

Learning studio ALTO & DIAL

In this video Chris Follows introduces an overview of JISC funded projects at UAL including ALTO and the new DIAL project (all links below) Chris joins the Learning Studio group 15/11/11 using Wimba. The learning studio group are a new community of practice at UAL meeting face-to-face 2 or 3 times a term at UAL. The worlds first interactive multi-cinema film premiere.

Defying the usual conventions of film, RAGE is the new cinematic creation from writer-director Sally Potter. Using a radical narrative structure focused entirely on individual performances, RAGE a dynamic series of interviews, as if shot by a schoolboy on his mobile phone, behind the scenes of a New York fashion show during a dramatic week.

Fourteen characters each have a role in the show, from the designer (Simon Abkarian) and his models (Lily Cole and Jude Law), the fashion critic (Judi Dench) and photographer (Steve Buscemi), to the financier (Eddie Izzard) and his bodyguard (John Leguizamo).

The radical style of RAGE is embraced in its unique distribution strategy.
The premiere will be broadcast live by satellite from the BFI Southbank to other UK cinemas. You can be part of the satellite broadcast of the Q&A after the film, sending your questions by Skype video and SMS direct from your cinema live to Sally and members of the RAGE cast.

Introduction, Innovative approaches in open educational practice at UAL

A brief overview of current Innovative approaches in open educational practice at UAL by Chris Follows, university of the arts London (ALTO and SCORE).

This video was produced for the Jorum presentation session at the ALT-C conference 2011, the process.arts sand casting core experiment videos were finalists in the 2011 Jorum L&T Competition.

Some Background context to UAL and current Innovative Approaches

Engaging with OER creation and sharing presents challenges to the Art and Design community where there is a strong tradition of studio-based practice and learning. Traditional didactic resources such as lecture notes and project briefs can be scarce in these subject areas, with the result that there can be 'gaps' when trying to create OERs along the lines pioneered by OpenCourseware at MIT and OpenLearn at the OU.

As part of my UAL fellowship in 2008 we developed Process.Arts, which offers some of the answers for capturing and sharing such situated and practice-based learning.

http://process.arts.ac.uk/ was developed in 2009 with the aim of creating a new user driven online studio community and collaborative resource that explores process in arts practice by showing the day-to-day studio/professional practice of staff and students of the six colleges of the University of the Arts London (UAL) whilst also sharing, informing and engaging with the wider community. Process.arts tries to address how we cluster all this activity together, encouraging users to collaborate, share and develop content in an space that bridges the internal and external for example:

Process.Arts is a social media platform that supports ways of representing and sharing such tacit knowledge using Video, image and audio the preferred media for capturing and sharing practice based art and design tutorials and resources.

For instance, the Introduction to Sand Casting videos (4 parts): were early experiments, the videos have been received well, attracting positive comments and over 100,000 views via YouTube - the content published remains affiliated to the institution 'the hosts', but users are free to explore and develop this content as they wish with Web 2.0 CMS functionality which provides an open social layer within an accessible, familiar, and collaborative environment.
