A 2015 Curriculum Development Fund and CCW Grad School supported project providing work experience opportunities to UAL students, where students created, curated, and executed a two day a symposia and live art event in relation to art on council estates and in the community.

Paint Club at Tate Britain: 'Painting as a Document'

Painting as a Document 25th April 2014: Clore Auditorium, Tate Britain,

London.Critic and writer Barry Schwabsky and artist Clare Woods selected paintings from Tate Britain's displays to discuss in relation to their own work, for an audience of UAL students, staff, researchers and artists from around the UK and the public.

Rumours that the ensuing critical uproar led to the police having to cordon off the Tate are, sadly, unfounded. You can view other Paint Club events from this link.

UALPaintClub - Paint Club is an informal network open to all staff and research students at the University of the Arts London, and anyone else with an interest in contemporary painting.Painting here is defined as an expanded field that relates to the specific histories and traditions of painting. Our activities publicly explore and debate what it means to research painting within the context of contemporary art practice. We aim to put on one or two events each year that respond to the concerns and interests of the membership. Affiliations are established with other institutions both in the UK and world-wide.

The first public event, The Processes of Painting, was held in June 2009 at the Swedenborg Society Hall in Bloomsbury, London. Through a series of conversations with painters who teach at the UAL it explored questions about methodologies and technologies as well as notions of expression and intention. Future activities include the 'Look Club' that will develop critical discourse around a single contemporary or historical painting.

Paint Club was founded by Rebecca Fortnum (CCW Graduate School), Jeffrey Dennis (artist & tutor at Chelsea College of Art & Design), Mick Finch (Central St Martins College of Art),Dereck Harris (Wimbledon School of Art) and Daniel Sturgis (Camberwell College of Art)

Derek Boshier: From Doris To Chemical Cowboys

Chelsea College of Art and Design, 16 John Islip Street, SW1P 4JU, Wednesday 18 January 2012 / 18.00 -- 19.30, Lecture Theatre
Los Angeles-based, British pop artist Derek Boshier gives a rare talk in London about his most recent projects, alongside the concepts and history of his earlier work.

The presentation is followed by an in-conversation with writer and pop culture commentator Paul Gorman. Boshier will discuss his relationship to popular culture with Paul Gorman, exploring how he has incorporated it into his practice.
Boshier is renowned for his contribution to the British Pop Art movement in the 1960's, emerging alongside fellow Royal College of Art students David Hockney, Allen Jones, and R.B. Kitaj.

In a career that has seen him create album designs for David Bowie, illustrate a songbook for The Clash, and feature in Ken Russell's documentary, 'Pop goes the easel,' Boshier has continually defied classification working across many different media. From painting, drawing, photography, film, and installation, to graphic arts, his work deals with the decimation of popular culture. Spanning mundane personal matters to military conflicts reported in the news, he satirises and confronts the cultural, social and political changes around him.
Recent projects include 'Drawings from Films' (2009-ongoing), a series of ink drawings that re-imagine and re-organise the film image, featuring Orson Welles' Citizen Kane, George Lucas' Star Wars, and Matteo Garonne's Gommorah. The anti-war installation, '99 Cent War' (2004) an indictment of the Gulf War, as well as an ongoing series of ink drawings made on found photographs entitled, 'Extreme Makeover' (2008).

He is represented in public collections worldwide including the TATE Collection, London, and MOMA, New York.
This event also promises an unmissable opportunity to see a screening of 'Reel,' a film by Boshier, originally shot on 16mm in 1973.

The Problem of Documenting the Creative Process - When Hans Namuth and Jacson Pollock finsihed filming on the Saturday before Thanksgiving in 1950 they walked inside from the barn, out of the cold. Pollock walked over to the sink, reached down, pulled out a bottle of whisky and said to Namuth, "This is the first drink I've had in two years. Dammit, we need it!" Jackson Pollock: Lights, Camera, Paint! (1951) In the summer of 1950, Hans Namuth approached Jackson Pollock and asked the abstract expressionist painter if he could photograph him in his studio, working with his “drip” technique of painting. When Namuth arrived, he found: A dripping wet canvas covered the entire floor. Blinding shafts of sunlight hit the wet canvas, making its surface hard to see. There was complete silence…. Pollock looked at the painting.

Then unexpectedly, he picked up can and paintbrush and started to move around the canvas. It was as if he suddenly realized the painting was not finished. His movements, slow at first, gradually became faster and more dancelike as he flung black, white and rust-colored paint onto the canvas. The images from this shoot “helped transform Pollock from a talented, cranky loner into the first media-driven superstar of American contemporary art, the jeans-clad, chain-smoking poster boy of abstract expressionism,” one critic later wrote in The Washington Post.

But Namuth wasn’t satisfied that he had really captured the essence of Pollock’s work. He wanted to capture Pollock in motion and color, to focus on the painter and painting alike. Above, you can watch the result of Namuth’s second effort. The ten-minute film, simply called Jackson Pollock 51 (the 51 being short for 1951), lets you see Pollock painting from a unique angle — through glass. The film achieved Namuth’s aesthetic goals, but it came at a price. Apparently the filming taxed Pollock emotionally, and by the evening, the painter decided to pour himself some bourbon, his first drink in two years.
