Pentagon Petal

This installation project by artist Fran Cottell and architect Marianne Mueller reflects on the Rootstein Hopkins Parade Ground as the dream site for Jeremy Bentham's experimental panopticon, the real Millbank Penitentiary, a military parade ground and now university campus, outdoor gallery and thoroughfare to Tate Britain.

From solitary confinement, to the military organisation of a group as a single unit to today's neoliberal forms of sociability, the social history of the Rootstein Hopkins Parade Ground represents a cross section through architecture's power to orchestrate social modes.

The intervention re-enacts a scaled version of the prison's infamous plan, editing and reinterpreting it into a more socially active figure: a flower shaped bench. Each of the six pentagons or petals - originally shaped to facilitate social control and designated for solitary confinement - now invites informal gathering. The intervention plays with ideas of exclusion and segregation while offering a generous place within the larger barren square.

A short film documenting Look At The Estate We're In (LATEWI). A 2015 Curriculum Development Fund and CCW Grad School supported project providing work experience opportunities to UAL students, where students created, curated, and executed a two day a symposia and live art event in relation to art on council estates and in the community.

Brian Chalkley's "Dawn in Wonderland and Other Stories" - book launch and panel discussion

Panel discussion which took place at the book launch event for Brian Dawn Chalkley's Dawn in Wonderland and Other Stories. The event was held at Chelsea College of Arts on Thursday 5 June 2014.

Panel: Dave Beech, screenwriter Tony Grisoni, Dr Sadie Murdoch, Raven Row Director Alex Sainsbury and Dr Stephen Wilson.

Brian Chalkley is Course Director of MA Fine Art at Chelsea. Chalkley is also an important transgender artist, known for his drawings, paintings and video work exploring queer identity and subculture.

His work is based around two characters Brian and Dawn, Dawn being a transvestite personality. Dawn in Wonderland and Other Stories is a book of drawings Chalkley created between 2000 and 2003. The book also includes texts by Guardian art critic Adrian Searle, and screenwriter Tony Grizoni.

The Making of Stanley Kubrick: a new oral history film series offer insights about the iconic film-maker’s creative process

More than a decade after Stanley Kubrick’s death he remains one of the most revered film-makers in history, but little is known of his creative process. Six years ago, researchers at the Stanley Kubrick Archive at University of the Arts London proposed a series of oral history films that would explore this 20th century icon’s inspiration, challenges and philosophy about film through interviews with his inner circle.

Housed at London College of Communication, the archive is bathed in light: white walls, pristine white floor, glowing white ceiling. With its sparse modern furniture and gallery-like backdrop, it is reminiscent the final scenes of 2001: A Space Odyssey. “The idea began when the archive arrived in 2007,” says Sarah Mahurter, archive manager and one of the champions of the project. That was when the first of hundreds of crates of material – annotated scripts, props, equipment, posters and more – were delivered from the Kubrick home in St Albans, where he lived for the last 20years of his life. The director had meticulously salvaged and stored every last thing relating to his phenomenal catalogue, from the tiniest elements of original costumes (including hairpins from Barry Lyndon), personal photographs taken on-set and private correspondence, to the vast collections of books Kubrick collected when he researched new projects.
