Pentagon Petal

This installation project by artist Fran Cottell and architect Marianne Mueller reflects on the Rootstein Hopkins Parade Ground as the dream site for Jeremy Bentham's experimental panopticon, the real Millbank Penitentiary, a military parade ground and now university campus, outdoor gallery and thoroughfare to Tate Britain.

From solitary confinement, to the military organisation of a group as a single unit to today's neoliberal forms of sociability, the social history of the Rootstein Hopkins Parade Ground represents a cross section through architecture's power to orchestrate social modes.

The intervention re-enacts a scaled version of the prison's infamous plan, editing and reinterpreting it into a more socially active figure: a flower shaped bench. Each of the six pentagons or petals - originally shaped to facilitate social control and designated for solitary confinement - now invites informal gathering. The intervention plays with ideas of exclusion and segregation while offering a generous place within the larger barren square.

The Smile part of London Design Festival

Over the past few weeks we have seen 'The Smile' being constructed on Chelsea College Parade Ground, it looks amazing. As well as this video which provides a fantastic insight into the architecture & design process involved, the build team have been posing images during its construction on Twitter see here #TheSmile aswell as updates on alisonbrooksarchitects.com. The Smile is part of #LDF16 London Design Festival created by @AlisonBrooksArc

About The Smile from its creators:

Take a first look at one of our 2016 Landmark Projects, The Smile, created by Alison Brooks Architects with Arup and The American Hardwood Export Council.

This spectacular urban pavilion could be described as an unidentified flying object: a 34m long, 3m high upside down arc poised on the urban horizon. It is a four sided curved tube that curves upward to its two open ends, taking the shape of a Smile. Hovering 3m above the ground, its two ends are viewing platforms that take in the sky and reach out to neighbouring buildings. Made entirely of tulipwood, and a segment of a 100m diameter circle, the Smile will create an immersive environment, offering the public a new and playful way of seeing London.

Coming to The Chelsea College of Art this September.

On 4 October 2010 Antony Gormley, the English sculptor most famous for the Angel of the North and the life size sculptures in Event Horizon nd Honorary Fellow and CSM graduate came to talk about his new book ”One and Other’ at Wimbledon College of Art as part of the annual Wimbledon Book Festival. This clip captures the talk in it’s entirety.

The book ‘One and Other’ documents the project of the same name and saw 100 days of human occupation of the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.
