20:20 project funding evaluation
For the 'Changing the Learning Landscape' online identities project successful applied for additional funding from arts temps as part of their 20:20 project, which gave as 20 hours with a designer. We worked with designer Safiyya Lee to develop initial poster designs to advertise the communities, and a final visualization of our findings. Below is our evaluation of the 20:20 project sent to arts temps.
What were your initial thoughts of the idea of the project?
This project with arts temps was a great chance to be able to extend our budget and employee a graduate designer to work with current UAL students in order to develop their ideas. We applied for the 20:20 project in order to be able to hire a designer for a HEA funded project looking at online identities at the university, through a series of 'community' meetings at their colleges.
What did you think of the process of getting your designer? (i.e. was it an easy process? Did you like that you could select your own designer?)
The process of getting the designer seemed quite straight forward. After we were told the application was successful a number of different designers were sent to us. This was great as we were able to select one who would work really well with the project, and give us the results we were after.

Did they meet your expectations?
Safiyya was really great to work with. Our initial meeting to discuss the posters to advertise the project was just with myself. Safiyya was great and developing the ideas that we had, and the ideas that had been passed on from previous meetings with the student community developers to come up with a very clear poster design. The designs were send within the deadline that we set and met all of our specifications. Our second meeting was with the community developers, where Safiyya worked with them to develop a way of visualizing their findings. This wasn't an easy task for Safiyya as the finding were mostly qualiative as appose to quantitative, and therefore not as simple to put into graphs and other visualizations. We are still waiting on the finial designs of these, but in the meeting Safiyya had a number of very strong ideas that I sure are going to be developed into some great designs.
Did the project take 20 hours or more?
We added an extra 10 hours onto the project for the finding data visualization.
How did 20:20 Design benefit you and your department?
Due to a restricted budget from the HEA, this would not have been possible without the 20:20 funding. This project enable us to provide poster designs for our students to advise the communities, and us to promote the project throughout the university. It has also enable us to visualize the finding from the project. This has given the project a concrte conclusion, as well as becoming a physical representation of the done by our student community developers and the members of their community. The findings designers will also enable us to present the findings from this project to future projects in a clear and comprehensive fashion. Our next project at DIAL is a direct development from this one, so the apply to do this is vital.
Could you summarise the project in a quote we can use for the website?
Working with Safiyya Lee for the 20:20 project at art temps was a brilliant way for us to extend our project in directions that our initial budget would not have allowed for. Her initial designs gave the project a push it needed from the start, and her final designs representing our finding gave as a clear summery of the project that the students we worked with could be proud of.
