Intro This project is a scoping exercise between the Women at the Well (w@tw) refuge centre and Central Saint Martin’s teaching staff, investigating how creative thinking can enhance and extend the reach of this drop-in refuge. The w@tw values intend to empower women to ‘make positive choices in their lives’ and sometimes uses creativity as part of this safe rehabilitation environment. CSM also aims to empower students through creative choices but in an extremely different teaching and learning environment. This project addresses one of the adverse consequences of the transformation of Kings Cross area – women sleeping rough.

Teaching staff are:
Cath Caldwell, Senior Lecturer Graphic Communication Design and Academic Coordinator
Sarah Gresty, Course Leader BA Fashion and Emily Wood Acting Stage Leader Graphic Communication Design

Background: The local women’s support service, women@thewell has found it almost impossible to meet the needs of homeless women recently due to the reduction in availability of safe shelter for women.

This collaboration between W@W and CSM would begin a dialogue and identify potential creative solutions for this drop-in support service. The service currently provides a safe space for vulnerable street women with complex needs who are involved in or at risk of prostitution to support them with access to housing, physical and mental health services, access to legal support, access to drug and alcohol services and any other support that women may need. They also offer food, shower and laundry facilities, health and wellbeing services and daily activities through the drop in whilst supporting women to gain access to mainstream services. The centre is less than a mile away from CSM.

Aim The aim is to create a partnership where we each learn from one another using a design thinking method. The process is described in the attached PDF. The project is due to complete in autumn 2017.
