Exploring the links between Arts and Business: insights for creative-based education

Presentation delivered by Prof Giovanni Schiuma as part of the CCW series 'The Expanded Designer: Education'.

What is education for? What kind of theory or context should be taught on design courses? What is this unit for? Is it really necessary? What role can creativity play in teaching other subjects? What are the advantages/ disadvantages of apprenticeships when compared to academic education (in a design subject)? What ideologies underlie today’s art schools? How will the changes in fees change your discipline? What are the implications of referring to students as ‘customers’? Who should pay for higher education? How would you articulate the value of an arts education? What is the relationship of your discipline to another – e.g. mechanical engineering / Ancient Greek? Is interdisciplinary learning a distraction or vital? How should the furniture in this room be arranged to facilitate new learning? How can we prepare for a future that is unknown? How can the space of education be claimed to re-imagine professional practice
