Feedback from DigiTell 2014; Exploring Online Presence in Creative Practice

As part of DigiTell 2014; Exploring Online Presence in Creative Practice, attendee's to the symposium were asked to fill out the following feedback form.

The Results showed an overwhelming positive response, with requests for further events at UAL in a similar vein, as well as further learning and teaching on how to set yourself up as a professional online, and what make a 'good' online presence for a creative. The result from the feedback forms can be seen below.

We had 46 Attendees

An interesting mix of staff and students from all 6 colleges and industry attendees.

We had 24 respondents who returned feedback at the end of the event:

What do you think UAL could offer to extend learning into online presence?

  • Confidence, resilience, development support for students from newbies to residents. More understanding of how crucial to everything, and how fundamental these skills are in all aspects of the curriculum

  • Digital platforms are part of marked criteria. Self-promotion viewed as integral to practice. Integrated as part of course because I know that workshops would be evidently over subscribed

  • Similar formats, collaboration

  • More sessions like this at college/course level. An online unit

  • UAL needs to be critically engaged itself and not assume it has all the answers

  • More workshops at subject level delivered to staff and students and programmed into the curriculum

  • Should this question read 'extend learning into ONLINE presence'??? I think students should be taught to build online spaces to best demonstrate their work

  • How to developed your identity in the online presence - learn how to use instragram, facebook, twitter to promote yourself. I, as a 21-year-old graphic design student, am not very educated of this.

  • More of these events would be a good start!

  • Student directed, student initiated

  • More such events please. I got caught up in a class and missed half of it but if you do have more I’m sure many many students would benefit from it.

  • Make a series of events like this across the universities of UAL

  • More questions? Longer panel discussion?

  • More symposiums on similar topics

  • Offering some mini-workshops, giving site/community suggestions relevant to interest/major

  • Begin to link staff members who are aware of online presence

What aspects of today event did you think we're successful?

  • Great speakers, just enough interest - not a 7 hour cram-a-thon

  • Both speakers - part Christian using the web live throughout. Seeing the websites/twitters feeds/ blogs

  • Speakers - stimulating

  • Needs to show greater granularity of understanding

  • All aspects, especially the panel and publication

  • Duration of speakers power points and discussion were just enough

  • I think Christian Payne’s points were very valuable and really taught me a new way to approach my online presence

  • Speakers were good and the format of the event was also well thought through

  • Panel discussion

  • Organisation, collaboration, interestingness

  • All

  • Connectedness

  • I could only attend the panel discussion which I thought was great because all questions were answered very simply and understandable way

  • The presentations were really successful, and the panel discussion clarified several issues

  • Hearing a variety of perspectives and allowing the audience to engage with the speakers, openly and critically

  • Having two speakers 1.implementingdigitial practice/literacy and 1. Delivering and creating digital practice provided interesting insight and tensions

  • Overall interesting speakers

  • Quality of discussions, quality of questions and discussions

Was there anything you felt could have been approved upon at today's event.

  • Better way of showing the twitter feed - cannot see it at the back! Live broadcast if the event...a workshop element for the interaction and understanding would be good

  • Panel could have been more inclusive/broad

  • Balancing staff and student voice

  • No

  • The room was a bit dark! Sleepy!

  • No, I really enjoyed it. I wouldn't know any better

  • I would like to see this kind of events to take place on Wednesday afternoons so more staff member could attend

  • More examples

  • References (biblio)

  • Will let you know, not as of now

  • No

  • Maybe if there was another presenter going more into the tools that a designer/student can do

  • Having a break in-between or make the talks a bit slower

How would you like to see the topics and themes brought up in the symposium today could be taken forwards by the university in order to aid the staff, students and graduates in their online identity?

  • Get executive board to do an exercise to identify their own 'online;' exposure, sharing and residences. Really push the mixed economy of online/offline. Allow students to personalise their institualised experience more -even if it is a 'corporate' vehicle, at least they can have it full of their luggage and stupid bobbing cat dashboard ornament.

  • Integrate teaching of keeping social media but also more practitioners talking whilst using the Internet on screens. Showing the blogs/twitter/websites they use. Also tutors (or departments) keeping blogs (or twitters) regularly updating them with useful articles etc.

  • Keep going!

  • Embed sessions/material in curriculum. Continued funding for research. More UAL wide events co-external speakers

  • Direct integration into curriculum and staff training

  • I think parts of the topics raised in todays talk should be part of the curriculum for some courses. Perhaps in cultural and historical studies.

  • I would like to be educated more on my online presence and know more apps to branch out.

  • We need to have more discussions to keep the topic alive. Staff training (academic staff) that should keep more up to date with digital technologies!

  • Would be nice to intergrade these discussions to actual practice, like within a workshop.

  • Use UAL web to disseminate

  • Just more such events will be helpful

  • Organise lectures across all the of the college of UAL

  • Should be a part of core curriculum for students

  • I think maybe offering some mini-workshops, assisting to help us

Thank you.
