The amazing adventures of tomatOER

I was invited to Oriole Really Re(Useful) Retreat by Chris Pegler at the Open University, event took place 13 - 14 June 2011 at The Inn at Woburn. I was late for the first day and Chris said she'd like to include a cardboard cut out of late comers so we were there in some form. I jokingly requested to be represented by a plant .....so Chris brought in a tomato plant cutting and this was generously given to me by Chris to keep.

On Monday we  mainly worked through ideas about reuse in small groups (including tomatOER).  This continued on day 2 where Helen Beetham delivered a role play workshop. The whole event was a space for conversations and comparing notes and ideas. There was a mix of National Teaching Fellows and SCORE fellows.

What I gained from the workshop:

  1. The importance of capturing user stories real stories or future stories (made up predictions). To think about externalising the process of creating OER and re-use and communicating this online as it may be useful to others.
  2. Hopefully contacts for future collaboration, Simon Thomson and Steven Stapleton to learn from their experiences and use their OER content and create collaborations with their HEIs, Richard Windle SCORE contact, Non Scantlebury connections and other 3rd party connection passed on by delegates including Alex di Savoaa at Falmouth open space. Lots of other future friendships and connections were made.
  3. Go to more events like this. Try and encourage clear language communication of the re-use concept.

I was really pleased to be invited and enjoyed the role play session on the second day, was a great location for this event.

TomatOER and I began our journey together.

Elevator pitch
Bearing tomatOER fruit
Below: This was the best tomatOER on the old plant so I kept it and used its seeds to grow this years crop.

Some support and guidence from Chris P below:

There is method here. You may not be so concerned about quality of seed if this is a sentimental thing :-) but save from the best fruit and looks like a long drawn out process.

If you look at   this has a complicated version full of explanation http://gardening.about.com/od/totallytomatoes/ss/TomatoSeeds.htm

This version looks more sensible and more do-able so having read the above attempt this one? http://organicgardening.about.com/od/vegetablesherbs/ss/savetomatoseeds.htm

The type was not as far as we know Hybrid - it was http://www.victoriananursery.co.uk/vegetable_seeds/tomato_seed_outdoor_girl/  (we think) so you should get several plants next year that resemble the one you had this year. And the following year. And on and on and on.

That is amazing and I am so impressed that the tomoto a) survived, b) bore fruit and c) replicated. Thanks for the update.

Those in the last picture do need dividing and potting on and sharing some more.
