The Open Practice unit at UAL
Lindsay Jordan, Senior Educational Developer and Unit Leader for Open Educational Practice (OEP) provided the below summary:
The Open Educational Practice (OEP) unit was made possible with funding from the HEA/JISC UKOER Phase 3 – Embedding and Sustaining Change programme. This unit builds on UAL’s existing JISC funded Open Educational Resources (OERs) projects (ALTO and ALTO-UK), and UAL’s DIAL Project, JISC funded as part of the Digital Literacies programme.
The unit is a 20 credit (HE Level 7) unit and falls within the CLTAD Academic Practice Provision (APP). It is being delivered for the first time in 2012-13 and has 10 participants.
The unit aims to explore definitions of what Open Education might mean and the implications of moving towards open online social spaces for learning. Further aims are to explore existing and create new OERs that stem from participants’ own teaching practice and may include learning content and software tools that can be freely and openly shared on the web using a Creative Commons Licence. Participants will not just engage in discussions around an open learning context but also assessment, feedback and moderation.
The development of the unit is likely to result in an increase in the creation of OERs for reuse and teaching on the APP as a direct result of participation and in communicating the experiences/sharing resources in the participants’ contexts and beyond.
