Pop-Up Digital MakerSpace week 5 & 6 Highlights

Highlights from week 5 & 6 of the the Pop-Up Digital MakerSpace project at UAL CCW:

Our First Arduino Q&A Meet-Up

Part of the Pop-Up Physical Computing Group: This was our first ardunio meet up and it was a great success. We are really lucky to have Arduino/electronics specialist Grzesiek Sedek who’s a specialist Tech at Wimbledon part of our group.

The meeting provides an opportunity for staff & students who would like to learn more about or try arduino, sensors, interactive tech and physical computing to meet informally with staff & students across CCW to exchange experiences & tips about physical computing and how they are experimenting with these technologies in their practice.

Next Arduino Q&A Meet-Up

Weds 2nd March 11am to 4pm at Chelsea A216
  • A chance to come together for a Q&A Meet-Up with interactive tech and physical computing experts, other staff and students working on interactive tech and physical computing projects
  • Its an informal get together not a workshop
  • Either come along and observe and learn more or bring along your projects & ideas to share and develop with the group
  • We have some arduino, sensors and physical computingArduino kits to play with, for use in A215 only
  • Weds 2nd March 11am to 4pm
  • Chelsea College of Arts A216 Digital Projects Space
Followed by Beers, Wine & Pop evening on Weds 2nd March 5pm to 6:30pm Open to All - Come along to the first of our informal Pop-Up MakerSpace social gatherings; chance to chat about stuff informally over a drink & nibbles.

3D printing

Part of the Pop-Up 3D Printing and Digital Fabrication Group

Build a 3D printer group: The group met again last week and things are moving fast, the group now communicating via whatsApp to help project manage all the different elements (will be meeting up again informally at the Beers, Wine & Pop evening on Weds 2nd March 5pm to 6:30pm in Chelsea A216)

Plus lots of interesting 3D print experiments happening. We are also starting to develop a bespoke '3D printing made simple' course we are going to start to pilot soon with the hope of also piloting this intro to 3D printing as an open online resource or course.

Next 3D printing Q&A Meet-Up

Mon 29th Feb 2-4pm in the Chelsea A216 Digital projects space

An opportunity staff & students who would like to learn more about or try 3D printing and meet informally with staff & students across CCW to exchange experiences & tips about 3D printing and how they are experimenting with 3D printing at CCW.

  • A chance to come together with staff & students who have been exploring 3D printing CCW and ask questions about their experiences.
  • Its an informal get together not a workshop
  • Either come along and observe and learn more or bring along your projects & ideas to share and develop with the group
  • Find out more about 3D printers at CCW and how you can experiment
  • Decide to hold regular meet-ups once or twice a week?

Virtual Reality Play (VR)

Part of the Pop-Up Virtual/Mixed Reality Group

Virtual Reality Oculus Rift: We had lots of staff & students visit the A216 space this week and many tried the Oculus rift for the first time and we now have a couple of students developing VR worlds with Unity software. Meet up coming soon.

Wimbledon Student who is keen to explore using Unity in her Arts practice Dave White UAL Head of Technology Enhanced Learning

Artificial Intelligence Research (AI)

Part of the Internet of Things Artificial Intelligence Group research (UAL AI in the Arts Meet-Up coming soon):

We went along to the Intelligence Unleashed panel discussion: Will AI make a real difference to learners?  By: Pearson and the UCL Knowledge Lab.

Intelligence Unleashed Back Story

Last autumn, Pearson and the UCL Knowledge Lab teamed up to convene the teaching and research communities for a series of events designed to explore artificial intelligence in the context of education. The first event explored questions about what AI is (and isn’t).

The second event (CCW Digital were part of) brought together AI experts, education technologists and educators for constructive conversations about how we might address real, pressing problems in education through innovative applications of smart technology.

A member of the panel we would like to bring over to UAL to participate in a AI in the arts debate would be Kaska Porayska-Pomsta. Kaska who holds a PhD in artificial intelligence and is a researcher for the UCL Knowledge Lab (a part of the IoE), where she also teaches. Her research focuses on new and effective modes of teaching and learning and the learning process between humans and between humans and machines.

Up-Coming: A week long 'Pop-Up Digital Making' Event: 16 - 20 May

A week long 'Pop-Up Digital Making' Event: 16th to 20th May - In the 'Not A Student Union Bar' at Chelsea College of Arts - lots of different staff & student activities, Jams, workshops happening together throughout the week based around our 5 themes.
