Introduction to the DIAL project and UALs Communities of Practice approach in the development of digital literacies by Nancy Turner. Until very recently, Nancy was the Associate Dean of learning, teaching and enhancement at UAL, and was instrumental in strategically developing e-learning initiatives for the University. Nancy Turner is Head of the Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching Effectiveness at the University of Saskatchewan. Her role involves strategic leadership of the Centre and leading and contributing to institutional initiatives to enhance learning and teaching.

The DIAL project partially funded by JISC Developing Digital Literacies Programme, was a two-year project (November 2011 to November 2013) at the University of the Arts London. The project will continue until Dec 2014 with UAL funding and support.

UAL

UAL is one of the largest specialist art and design institutions in Europe with 19,000 students and around 3,200 staff. It has 6 constituent colleges across London, each with distinctive cultures and identities. This collegiate structure brings an immense richness and diversity of character to the University but also some challenges in terms of ensuring parity of experience for our students.

Case Study - Boundaries not barriers: A communities of practice approach to staff and student engagement with digital technologies

Developing opportunities for cross College collaboration and sharing of practice across 6 geographically dispersed colleges is a challenge for University of the Arts London. To address this challenge, the Centre for Learning and Teaching in Art and Design has adopted a community of practice based approach to staff and student engagement with digital technologies. This session will provide an overview of the approach and explore a few examples with contribution from students who have participated. Read more: here
